The Skidoo according to Domenico Formichetti

The Skidoo according to Domenico Formichetti

It’s hard to envision a map of the modern world without considering Domenico Formichetti’s graphic research and fashion. It's hard not to be captivated by the visionary nature of his designs. Domenico absorbs, processes, and reinterprets reality through the lens of his own imagination. During Milan Fashion Week 2025, NSS Magazine, as part of its Beyond Fashion programme on independent fashion, invited the designer to explore the world of Napa. From the very start, the chemistry was undeniable: Napa’s icons seamlessly merged with Domenico’s lunar aesthetic. He shared with us how it all came together.

Your project is called PDF, it contains your initials but has one extra letter: what does this acronym stand for
The "P" stands for PROGETTO (Project) – Progetto Domenico Formichetti.

A project is a complex, unique, and time-limited endeavor. It is aimed at achieving a predetermined objective through a continuous process of planning, execution, and control of various resources, while managing interdependent constraints of cost, time, and quality.

What was your world like before enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan? You didn’t just experience urban environments…
I spent most of my childhood and teenage years in Abruzzo, between Piazza Gianbattista Vico and the Scalette of Chieti Scalo, the mountains of Passolanciano, and the surrounding countryside.

In your creative process, it seems that your references are constantly evolving. What inspires you?
Everything: whatever surrounds me, what I see. Films, music, sports - I don’t have a precise starting point; I go a lot by feeling.

What inspired your collaboration with Napa?
I started with my memories and what the garment represented to me, then fused that with the aesthetics of PDF and the treatment I usually apply to some of my pieces.

Your approach was very physical - you seem to have given the Skidoo a new skin. Was that your goal?
The idea was to create a fur effect, but since I started with an already finished garment, we found this solution: a furry flock applied on top, which I then broke up and gave a bit of a teddy texture.

Is Napapijri a brand that holds special meaning for you?I’ve been wearing Napa since I was a kid. For me, it was a kind of statement. My first Napa was mustard-coloured, and I was so proud of it.
