Alpine Glacial Karst
- Alpine Glacial Karst
A project to explore "holes in the water", caves formed by melting inside large glaciers.
La Venta has been operating on glaciers all round the world for over 20 years, studying the caves that form in the nucleus of the ice. We started in the Alps, above all on the Gorner glacier, the cradle of modern glacial speleology, went on to explore glaciers in Central Asia, Iceland and the Svalbards, and ended up concentrating most of our efforts on the Patagonian glaciers. More recently, we've done survey work in the Antarctic, carrying out the first speleological expedition on the Sixth Continent, and reconnaissance in the northern Svalbards. Over the years we've managed to delineate and model the phenomenology of cave forming processes and the drainage structures inside temperate glaciers, meaning those around 0 degrees C, which is what we call "classic" glacial speleology because it's the most common in the ablation zones of glacial tongues.
